La Oldsmobile 88 fu prodotta in 11 differenti Serie tra il 1949 ed il 1999. Era disponibile nelle versioni Berlina a 2 e a 4 porte, Coupé, Familiare, Cabriolet ed Hard Top (dal 1950). La 1° Serie... il cui primo modello era denominato Rocket 88... fu costruita dal 1949 al 1953. Nel 1951 vennero introdotti i modelli 88: la normale ... questa visibile nella fotografia... e la Super mentre nel 1952 il modello base assunse la denominazione di De Luxe. La Serie 88 era dotata di un motore V8 di 5000 cm3 erogante 145 cavalli nella versione normale e 160 nella versione Super. Si poteva avere con il cambio manuale a due rapporti più la retromarcia oppure con un cambio automatico a tre velocità. Nel 1950 al cambio manuale venne aggiunta una terza marcia in avanti. Queste vetture modello 88 risultarono vittoriose in moltissime competizioni fra cui si può citare il 1° posto nella prestigiosa Carrera Panamericana del 1950... conosciuta anche come Carrera Mexico. Si noti l'aeroplano stilizzato sul cofano motore. Spesso... all'epoca della costruzione di simili vetture... negli Stati Uniti... venivano posti degli abbellimenti di tipo aeronautico per omaggiare l'aviazione.
