Edificato sulla cima di un suggestivo promontorio, a cui si accede per una sottile lingua di terra all'estrema punta nord-occidentale di Marettimo, il castello sorge sulle fondamenta di una torretta di avvistamento costruita nel IX secolo dai Saraceni. Nel XII secolo Ruggero II, re normanno di Sicilia, fortificò le postazioni difensive delle Egadi, tra le quali la torretta di Punta Troia; ma fu nel 1600 circa che gli Spagnoli edificarono l'attuale castello, dotandolo di una grande cisterna per la raccolta d'acqua e di una chiesetta che fu chiamata Real Chiesa Parrocchiale di Marettimo. La cisterna, detta la Fossa, venne successivamente adibita dagli stessi Spagnoli a prigione per i reati più gravi.Tra i prigionieri vi fu rinchiuso nel 1798 il giovanissimo Guglielmo Pepe. Il castello di Punta Troia è uno dei monumenti più suggestivi e importanti di Marettimo. Il Castello vanta di una vista mozzafiato e un ampia veduta su “cala Manione” e “Cala Scalo Maestro” ma non è da meno quella sul paese e su punta San Simone. A differenza dei forti di Favignana, il castello di Punta Troia è stato recentemente ristrutturato ed è aperto al pubblico come Museo delle carceri e Osservatorio della Foca monaca: l'antica fortezza è, quindi, oggi un centro culturale nel cuore del Mediterraneo. Si tratta di un sito archeologico spettacolare che rappresenta l'emblema dell'isola, cui si accede o da un sentiero forestale in almeno un'ora e mezza di percorso per camminatori da trekking, o tramite le barche dei barcaioli dell'isola che conducono fino alla spiaggia di Scalo Maestro, una delle più belle di Marettimo, dalla cui caletta si percorrerà una salita di circa un quarto d'ora su un sentiero lastricato.
