From last night. Super conditions but I had trouble with my scope and didn't get as much as I wanted. Composite of three stacks of only 3 to 9 shots (3 darks each) at 20, 40, and 60 seconds. 600mm/90mm triplet + 2x Barlow on my E-M1 Mark II.

Can you be more precise about the shots? (3 dark each) are the dark? The result is acceptable since you have placed a Barlow in the optical train, but it has caused a toning in the blue, it follows a red too on the violet where, with a proper PP, they would emerge also part of the molecular clouds present around M43 ;-)

Toning on magenta. You choked the weakest clouds. Basically you cut half M42... Stretches display and adjusts colors

I agree with the previous comment

I agree also! This is the first time I have ever tried this sort of thing and I have a LOT to learn.
In the meantime I figured out the problem with my EQ5 that was causing tracking problems and giving me lots of not-round stars even at 20 seconds. Something had gotten in between the aluminum body and the RA tube, and it was totally blocked by the next day. No idea what it was, or how it got there, most likely a piece of metal. I had to use a fine flat file and fine sandpaper to smooth out the damaged spot on the tube. Now it is as smooth as silk and a test the next night on Prokyon gave me round stars again. I only have a normal dual axis controller, no tracking.
Details:
3x60 sec. + 3 dark, 8x40 sec. + 4 dark, 9x20 sec. + 6 dark. I did the stacking in DSS and combined in CS2. I tried to process it so that the Trapeze would still be seen and the surrounding sky would be dark, which meant loosing a lot of the nebula. As for the color, I don't really know HOW it should be. I have looked at lots of pictures, but there are such a huge differences it is hard to know what to do. Maybe I will put up a version as shot, without the color adjustments I made in PS to make it look nice and colorful. ;-)

I have used my scope more on birds than anything else (https://www.flickr.com/photos/42162009@N04/albums/72157635228747166) Other than a few moon shots and one miserable try on M101, I have not pointed it skyward. The Barlow is a Meade 2" 2x TeleXtender, actually too big and heavy for what I need. I get better results, at least in the center, from an old Celestron Ultima 1 1/4" 2x that I have adapted. I just hope to get some sort of results with what I have. I am too old to want to spend piles of money and spend so much time to do it "right". We also get few clear nights around here, and even shooting the moon can be difficult.
Thanks! Lots to think about....
