La prima cosa che si nota camminando per le strade di Avana sono le case diroccate, come se Cuba fosse uscita da una guerra, e le caratteristiche macchine americane degli anni 50. Purtroppo l'assenza di pezzi di ricambio e quindi la manutenzione "fai da te", unito al costo elevato della benzina, spesso "allungata", creano le condizioni per cui le auto producono fumi letteralmente irrespirabili. Un mix letale che ti mette veramente a dura prova. Anche le case pericolanti e fatiscenti sono un effetto indiretto dell'embargo, che rende spesso irreperibili le materie prime.
