il suo nome deriva da un'antica leggenda secondo la quale il poeta latino Virgilio nascose nelle segrete dell'edificio un uovo che aveva lo scopo di tenere in piedi l'intera fortezza, infatti la sua rottura avrebbe provocato non solo il crollo del castello stesso ma anche una serie di catastrofi all'intera città di napoli.
