Il Monte Pellegrino (Munti Piddirinu in siciliano) è un promontorio in forma di vera e propria montagna calcarea, alta 609 metri s.l.m., che chiude a Nord il Golfo di Palermo e a Sud il Golfo di Mondello. In epoca antica era conosciuto come Heirkte. Dagli Arabi era chiamato Bel Grin o Gebel Grin (cioè «monte vicino») Il massiccio montuoso del Monte Pellegrino, che si protende sul mare Tirreno, ha i ripidi fianchi segnati da grotte e fratture millenarie. I viaggiatori del passato, primo fra tutti Goethe, lo definirono «il promontorio più bello del mondo», anche perché vi riscontrarono quei magici contrasti, maestosità e dolcezza, che erano tanto amati nel Settecento e nell'età del Romanticismo. Il Foro Italico e il monte Pellegrino nel 1870. Il Monte Pellegrino non è un semplice promontorio come potrebbe pensare chi lo osserva da Palermo, ma un vero e proprio massiccio montuoso, caratterizzato da fianchi ripidi ricchi di grotte, e da una orografia estremamente movimentata, ricca di pianori praticabili, caratterizzati da fenomeni di carsismo per cui le acque non scorrono in superficie ma filtrano in numerosissimi anfratti per poi riapparire come sorgenti. Il massiccio montuoso visto dall'alto presenta forma allungata, i due lati maggiori guardano l'uno il mare, l'altro la piana verso l'interno. Il lato corto che guarda ad est è quello, celeberrimo, verso Palermo. Il Monte Pellegrino fu menzionato da Polibio come Ercte o Eircte perché durante la prima guerra punica nel 247 a.C. Amilcare Barca vi pose l'accampamento tenendo testa ai Romani che occupavano Panormus per tre anni. Nel corso del Settecento le pendici del Monte erano diventate ad occidente confine di ville suburbane e tenute di caccia, ad oriente erano state colonizzate da borgate, tonnare e ville. La parte superiore del monte appariva più brulla in contrasto con la passeggiata elegante del lungomare. Alla fine dell'Ottocento la nuova classe dominante, la borghesia urbana, sedotta dall'esempio delle grandi città del continente cerca di adeguare l'immagine del promontorio all'immagine che ha di sé avviando campagne di rimboschimento che però cercavano di ricreare un ambiente totalmente diverso da quello più consono della macchia mediterranea. Si comincia a cercare di sfruttare il monte a fini utili, nei progetti dell'architetto comunale Damiani Almeyda e quelli privati si propone la creazione di una stazione climatica d'élite per villeggianti stabili e ospiti stranieri alla ricerca della vicinanza del mare, del clima collinare, del belvedere e la vicinanza della città. Durante il mese di giugno del 2007 il monte ha subito un vasto incendio che ha incenerito decine di alberi. Sulla sommità della montagna sorgono numerosi ripetitori televisivi e radiofonici e radar militari. Un nuovo incendio, di natura dolosa, ha interessato il promontorio il 16 giugno 2016, minacciando il santuario e il castello Utveggio.
