Nel monumento, datato 1875, è raffigurata la vedova, in un gesto di cordoglio; recando una corona, bussa alla porta bronzea del sepolcro, sulla quale è rappresentata una clessidra, simbolo classico del tempo che passa. Come sovente a Staglieno, la rappresentazione del compianto prevale su quella del defunto, relegata a un semplice ritratto in medaglione, posto in alto, attorniato dai simboli che ne identificano sinteticamente la professione (bussola, caduceo, ancora, libri, mappamondo, timone). Chiarisce l'epitaffio, infatti, che le fortune di Pietro Badaracco derivarono dalle sue capacità di capitano marittimo, che “con applaudita perizia” aveva percorso “i mari dell'antico e del nuovo mondo”. Pur rimandando a un modello illustre – il tema del superstite dolente davanti alla porta del sepolcro è tratto dal famoso Monumento a Maria Cristina d'Austria, capolavoro neoclassico di Canova a Vienna - l'impostazione qui è diversa e prevale una nota moderna: la vedova indossa abiti alla moda dell'epoca, analiticamente descritti, e lo scialle traforato rivela le indubbie capacità tecniche del suo autore.
