Half moon sent on March 29, 2018 (10:34) by Danc.licks. 4 comments, 815 views. [retina]

ISO 200, tripod.

I finally got an old EQ3 mount for my 90/600 ED triplet refractor, and even though it was VERY windy, I was able to get this. Stack of 29 stills, with a 2X Barlow. You can see that the Barlow looses sharpness even a little way off the center, and I just got a Meade 2x TeleXtender that should be much better.

I started with 192 raw frames, 5184x3888px, taken in 60 frame bursts at 10 fps until the buffer was full, then I had to wait a few seconds. The moon just fits into the frame. No chance without a tracking mount. I then went through and threw out the obvious bad frames, concentrating on the terracing on the east side of Arzachel. That cut it down to about 65. A second sorting cut it down to 29 frames which I exported as tiffs and stacked in AutoStakkert3 and sharpened in RegiStax6.
The EM1 Mark II does not record video larger than 4096 x 2160px, and also not in raw.
We seldom have good seeing here, on the outskirts of Vienna, but it was not bad that night, just very windy which made for many blurred frames. I go up a hill (400 meters above sea level) a bit away from the city, close to where we live (Mauerbach) to get away from the light pollution and the bad air from the heating systems in the houses nearby.

You did a good job, Daniel. It's true, if the barlow is not of the highest quality it can give you those problems: try the Meade duplicator and let us know the difference. If you want to further enlarge the image without adding other optics you have to increase the "draft", that is the distance between the refractor's focus and the film plane. Your ED triplet is a great tool!

The Barlow I used is, from what I have read, supposed to be quite good. It is a Celestron Ultima 2x, 1.25", the short version with three elements. It seems to perform well in the center, which is all that matters for viewing, but for photography it is not so good. I could have done a mosaic, but it was the first time I tried it and didn't realize it would be so soft around the edges.
Almost full moon tonight, and calm out, but I can't even see Polaris! Too hazy.
Yes, the triplet is really good, much better than the Skywatcher 80/600 Black Diamond I had before. Mostly I use it on birds!

Second half of this bunch is with the triplet.
I just fear I have reached the limits of what I can do with it and at my age (73) I don't really want to spend a lot of money on something like a Big Mak. MrGreen
