La volpe culpeo (Lycalopex culpaeus), chiamato anche volpe rossa, è il secondo canide vivente più grande del Sud America dopo il lupo dalla criniera rigata. Sia le gambe che la testa sono rossastre,la pancia,il collo e la bocca sono bianchi,la parte posteriore è grigia a striscie. La coda è molto popolata di peli grigi, che diventano neri verso la punta. Gli esemplari provenienti dalla zona continentale sudamericana pesano tra 5 e 7 kg, ma la sottospecie che vive nella Terra del Fuoco raggiunge i 14 kg.
