La Scala della Ragione fa parte del complesso monumentale di Palazzo della Ragione di Verona. Costruita in marmo rosso veronese, la scala collega il Cortile del Mercato Vecchio, che si apre al centro del Palazzo, con il grande portale del piano nobile. Il progetto di costruzione risale al 1446, quando il Consiglio Cittadino decise di realizzare una scala esterna, accessibile dal cortile, ai piedi della Torre dei Lamberti per raggiungere il piano nobile e ridare prestigio alla struttura. L'intervento, iniziato sotto il governo del podestà Michele Venier, venne forse completato già entro il 1450, sotto il podestà Lodovico Foscarini. Con l'inizio del Cinquecento, la Scala della Ragione fu abbellita diventando un esempio di commistione tra stili: all'impianto tardogotico si aggiunsero infatti dettagli rinascimentali, come la testa femminile e il tondo a rilievo con il busto di un paggio e uno scudo araldico ? posti sul fronte della scala. La copertura, costituita da un loggiato di tre arcate, fu invece eliminata tra 1894 e 1897 durante i restauri di Camillo Boito . Allo stesso periodo risale anche il loggiato del cortile, che permetteva il collegamento con la sala della torre della Cappella, utilizzata per le udienze da podestà e giudici veronesi. Nei pressi della scala si doveva sporgere un balcone, quell'arengario o “rengeria”, a cui si affacciavano i giudici per pronunciare le sentenze.

This really is a beautiful, well constructed image, though the foreground 'draw' hints at a wider angle than of 18mm on DX (27mm on FX), only a moderate wide angle by today's standards.
