Aurora borealis on Bergsfjorden sent on January 21, 2018 (9:32) by Juza. 31 comments, 13480 views. [retina]

at 11mm, 30 sec f/4.0, ISO 6400, tripod.

On this trip I had not planned to photograph the Northern Lights, but last night I still wanted to try, even to test the Fuji X-T20 :-) Despite the lens not suitable for night photos (the 10-24 is a f / 4, definitely dark for this area), I still managed to take home a picture by shooting at 6400 ISO; at this sensitivity, however, all the APS-C sensors show their limits (as can be seen in the full resolution version).

Despite the limitations of the sensor, you have still captured a good photo, as you said well is not the lens suitable for this kind of shots :-)

actually you have lost many of the colors of the dawn, and the definition above all of the lights of the village and the nearby wood is not that great, but you could not lower the ISO and lengthen the time? or was that the test?
Could you have avoided sharpness problems with focus stacking instead of using hyperfocal?
I ask ignorant questions because I want to learn how to do the best even in cases where "I really need the lens I left at home!" Coma when you make fotosub, mount the macro and get the shark, mount the wide angle and see the most beautiful flabellina of your life ...

Emanuele, but do not you have 12 Samyang with you?

if I had lengthened the time the stars would have come "crawled" because of the Earth's rotation ;-)

no, take into account that I focused in live view on the lights of the village and a / 4 depth of field is more than enough to get everything in focus ... the lack of clarity is due to ISO 6400.

but do not have 12 Samyang with you?

on this trip I did not bring the Sony kit ;-)

How are you behaving in the rest of the trip?

I know the place and despite the noise, the photo deserves because it moves me in my opinion!
Then a spectacle of nature which is the aurora always deserves a shot, so only compliments :-D

Very impressive despite the non-optimal means that you have available for this type of photography.

Have a good trip

Patrician

Despite the limitations given by the lackluster lens, you still got a good image. Given the shooting data, I imagine that the aurora was very weak, perhaps barely perceptible to the naked eye. Rare for those places is instead the sky completely clear of clouds.

I dissociate myself from the average of the comments in this photo. I find it very beautiful as a point of recovery and composition. What I would like to understand is whether it is just sensor noise because of the high ISO or even the limits of a not too high-performing optics. I do not want to trigger the usual discussions on the size of the sensor but I think this APS-C Fuji is not as performing as I would have expected. If the comparison with photos at night for example those of Aleziggio made with an Olympus not too recent it seems to me that the results of the m4 / 3 are much better especially if coupled with professional optics. Even Federico Isacchi seems to give me photos at night far better than this.
Obviously my criticism is part of it as a holder of Olympus equipment, but objectively the result of the photo made with Fuji material seems to me of poor quality.

@remo lanzoni: it may be ... but comparisons (true) should be done in the field simultaneously taking the same subject with different machines and shooting data equal.

at 6400 ISO, with a very dark scene, it is inevitable that there is a lot of noise, despite the X-T20 uses the excellent 24-megapixel sensor also on X-T2, Sony A6300 and Sony A6500 ... but 6400 is really as much for an APS-C.

if I had used a suitable lens for these photos, es. a f / 2, shooting at 1600, the result would be much better ;-)

Very nice ... the noise does not bother me ... I see Norway poor in snow ... even miserly winter in those parts?

An aurora boreal with unusual colors, for me, and beautiful. 6400 ISO! They make me dizzy.
