La festa di Santa Maria Madre della Consolazione, o più comunemente chiamata festa della Madonna della Consolazione, è il principale evento annuale civile e religioso della città di Reggio Calabria. La festa viene celebrata nel mese di settembre. Il dipinto è opera del reggino Nicolò Andrea Capriolo Si narra che la sacra effigie, nel 1577, parlò a un umile fraticello per annunciare la fine della terribile pestilenza che in quel momento affliggeva la città di Reggio, il dipinto portato nella cattedrale, riapparì subito dopo sulla collina dell'Eremo, questo prodigio fu interpretato dai fedeli come segno con cui la Madonna chiedeva di erigere proprio in quel luogo la sua chiesa, e la popolazione così fece, da quel momento in poi il dipinto vive una tradizione carica di fede e di coinvolgimento popolare, generando una festa particolarmente sentita da tutti i reggini.
