In una traversa di Corso Lodi formata dall'incrocio delle vie Scrivia e Tagliamento si trova una piazzetta che funge da sagrato per la chiesa di San Luigi, una chiesa abbastanza importante, soprattutto per il quartiere.. Questo monumentale tempio ideato dal Parroco di Vergiate don Locatelli e studiato in tutti i suoi particolari dall'Ing. Casati lo si volle dedicare a San Luigi Gonzaga, un giovane nobile del 1568 che lasciò il suo il palazzo per aiutare i lebbrosi in un ospedale. Posta la prima pietra nel novembre del 1892, il tempio di stile lombardo-basilicale venne aperto al culto nel 1896 e consacrato dal cardinal Ferrari il 3 luglio 1897. Generose offerte raccolte in tutta la diocesi permisero il completamento della chiesa in tempi brevi. Nel 1903 su progetto dell'ingegner Antonio Casati, venne costruito il grande campanile, alto 50 metri. Le cinque campane in bronzo furono consacrate il 12 giugno del 1904, e su tutte le campane fu realizzata la decorazione pittorica opera di Giulio Cesare Poggi e Luigi Grossi. Seguirono la facciata nel 1906, e, nel 1908, l'altare maggiore dominato da una statua di legno di San Luigi Gonzaga. Di fronte all'altare, per terra, è stato posto nel 1971 un mosaico che ricorda il Concilio Vaticano II; al centro di questo mosaico spiccano i due stemmi di Giovanni XXIII e di Paolo VI i due pontefici del Concilio. Sempre sull'altare sono custodite le reliquie dei Santi Martiri Gervaso e Protaso. Uno dei due altari è dedicato alla Madonna del Rosario, compatrona della Parrocchia. Ai lati della sua statua sono dipinte le immagini di S.Monica, madre di Sant'Agostino, e di San Giuseppe. Su tre vetrate poste sopra gli altari laterali e sopra il portone di ingresso sono rappresentate scene di vita del Santo. Quella sopra il portone centrale rappresenta San Luigi mentre riceve la prima comunione da San Carlo Borromeo, l'altra vetrata rappresenta San Luigi mentre sorregge un appestato dal quale contrarrà la malattia che lo condurrà alla morte. Attaccato ad un pilastro di sinistra si trova un massiccio pulpito di legno scuro, dal quale una volta veniva proclamata l'omelia. Ancora una nota di attenzione merita il basamento dell'altare maggiore, dove scolpito nel legno, è rappresentato un pellicano mentre, squarciandosi il petto, nutre i suoi piccoli. Secondo una antica credenza infatti, si pensava che questo animale, in mancanza di cibo per nutrire le sue creature, offrisse loro il proprio corpo. Per questo motivo è stato scelto come simbolo per il Salvatore. Commenti, consigli e critiche, sempre super graditi. Grazie.
