La Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore di Terracina è nota come Chiesa Nuova oppure come Chiesa Grande. Il progetto per la realizzazione del monumento viene approntato sul finire del XVIII secolo, in pieno periodo neoclassico. Il primo progetto per la realizzazione dell'edificio sacro fu affidato a Giuseppe Valadier, l'architetto che aveva anche sistemato la Piazza del Popolo di Roma e i giardini del Pincio. Il progetto del Valadier prevedeva la realizzazione di un convento annesso, da adibire alla promozione delle vocazioni sacerdotali e all'educazione scolastica dei giovani. Il convento non venne realizzato a causa della scarsità di fondi. La chiesa e l'annesso convento nel progetto del Valadier costituivano un corpo architettonico unitario ed armonico nella sua realizzazione. A completare la struttura era una Esedra, oggi Piazza Garibaldi. Questo è il grande tempio voluto da Pio VI, ma purtroppo egli non ne vide neppure le fondamenta, perché l'occupazione dello Stato Pontificio da parte dei francesi affrettò la fine del suo lungo pontificato, ed il Papa sereno e generoso morì in Francia, prigioniero di Napoleone, il 29 Agosto 1799. La lapide collocata nel pilone di sinistra del transetto dell'altare maggiore, ricorda il drammatico epilogo del pontificato di Pio VI, collegando ad esso la mancata costruzione della chiesa. Il progetto per l'edificio che fu realizzato nel secolo successivo è stato eseguito da Antonio Sarti. Il progetto fu premiato con la medaglia d'oro nell'Esposizione Universale di Londra ed è tuttora riconosciuto come uno dei capolavori dell'architettura sacra neoclassica in Italia. La costruzione dell'edificio fu ultimata nel 1845, mentre l'apertura al culto avvenne nel 1843. Inizialmente la Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore era consacrata a San Pio V e affidata alle cure agli appartenenti all'Ordine dei Domenicani. La facciata della Chiesa del Santissimo Salvatore è caratterizzata da un bellissimo pronao. Il monumento è a pianta centrale a tre navate. La lunghezza dell'asse maggiore, dal portone centrale al corridoio deambulatorio dell'abside, è approssimativamente di 80 metri, la larghezza di 30 metri e la superficie totale, comprese anche le cappelle, di oltre 2.000 mq.
