Il Contrafforte Pliocenico è l'insieme di rupi rocciose in pietra arenaria che si snodano come un bastione naturale tra le valli dei fiumi Setta, Reno, Savena, Zena e Idice. Le rocce costituenti il Contrafforte sono il risultato della sedimentazione di sabbie e ghiaie trasportate dai torrenti appenninici all'interno di un ampio golfo marino che nel Pliocene (tra i 5 i 2 milioni di anni fa), interessava vasta parte dell'attuale Appennino Bolognese (la linea di costa era a circa 15 km a monte rispetto alla via Emilia). A causa dell'innalzamento e dell'abbassamento del livello del mare (causate da glaciazioni e deglaciazioni), vi furono numerosi cicli di sedimentazione. In questa immagine si può osservare una delle propaggini all'estremo nord-orientale del Contrafforte, in questo caso con elevazione modesta, inferiore ai 200m. Le massime quote che esso raggionge sorpassano i 600m: il punto più alto è costituito da Monte Adone, 655m, di altissimo interesse paesaggistico (parete verticale, torrioni rocciosi) e storico (era all'interno della Linea Gotica, Seconda Guerra Mondiale, e su di esso erano collocate posizioni di artiglieria tedesche). Nella valle dell'Idice il Contrafforte raggiunge la quota di 638m in corrispondenza del Monte delle Formiche, ad una ventina di km da dove è stata fatta questa foto, sulla cui cima si trova un santuario Mariano facilmente individuabile anche dalla pianura fuori Bologna, grazie alla prominenza spiccata del monte stesso.
