Il Parco dei Gessi Bolognesi si estende in un'area di forte interesse geologico, ancora prima che paesaggistico. La peculiarità maggiore è data dalla costituzione eterogenea del suolo, principalmente gessi e argille. Tale composizione ha generato fenomeni di carsismo di notevole interesse, con grandi doline e oltre cento grotte, la più famosa delle quali è la grotta della Spipola. Altra peculiarità di questo parco è l'estrema vicinanza all'area urbana di Bologna: il centro storico dista appena una decina di chilometri, eppure immergendosi nei sentieri di quest'area si può avere la sensazione, in centri tratti, di essere lontani da tutto. La zona inoltre è interessante dal punto di vista faunistico: sia uccelli che mammiferi popolano i boschi e i fiumi del parco, grazie alla protezione che esso garantisce. Inoltre le numerose doline e valli cieche forniscono una protezione natuale per tutti gli animali in quanto, con la loro conformazione e la fitta vegetezione di cui sono ricoperte, risultano di non facile praticabilità. Questa foto è fatta dal crinale che separa la valle dell'Idice, a destra nell'immagine, dalla val di Zena, ad una quota di circa 230m sul livello del mare. Poco più avanti lungo il sentiero si raggiunge il coronamento di una delle doline maggiori dell'area, la buca di Gaibola. La roccia chiara, ben visibile, è l'affioramento in superficie della Vena del Gesso, che dà il nome all'area.
