Storia di Sperlonga: secondo alcuni studiosi, infatti, non lontana dalla sue coste sorgeva Amiclae, la misteriosa città fondata dai Laconi. Ma furono i romani a scoprirla alla fine dell'età repubblicana, realizzando magnifiche residenze, epicentri produttivi e di otium, attratti dalla bellezza del luogo e dalla mitezza del clima. All'Imperatore Tiberio va il merito di aver fatto costruire una villa imponente, che inglobava anche un'ampia grotta, nella quale furono collocate pregevoli opere marmoriche che celebravano le gesta di Odisseo. Saranno proprio le numerose cavità naturali, in latino speluncae, tra cui quella utilizzata dall'imperatore a determinare il nome del futuro paese. Dopo la caduta di Roma, i ruderi della residenza imperiale, verso il VI secolo, servirono da rifugio a comunità e popolazioni locali. Da queste popolazioni vengono i primi abitanti di Sperlonga, che cominciava lentamente ad arroccarsi sulla collina di San Magno. Una necessità determinata non solo dalle malattie delle paludi, ma dai continui attacchi dei pirati che infestavano il Tirreno. Per proteggersi dalle incursioni che a ondate continue predavano quei lidi, vennero costruite alcune torri di avvistamento. Ma tutto fu inutile e il piccolo centro venne raso al suolo nell'agosto del 1534 dalle orde di Kaireddin Barbarossa (famoso pirata ed ammiraglio della flotta ottomana). Nel Settecento e nell'Ottocento, Sperlonga assunse l'attuale caratteristica struttura a forma di testugine e venne arricchita con chiese e palazzi signorili. L'agricoltura rifiorì, ma non riuscì a far decollare l'economia.Il grande sviluppo verrà solo dopo la costruzione della litoranea Terracina-Gaeta, aperta nel 1957. La nuova arteria fece conoscere l'antico borgo marinaro e la preziosa collezione di marmi di Villa Tiberio, lanciando Sperlonga come una delle mete turistiche e culturali più apprezzate del Lazio.
