Costruita su un preesistente tempio pagano dedicato a Venere, la Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore rappresenta l'edificio di culto più importante di Alatri. Realizzata intorno alla seconda metà del V secolo d.C., nel corso del tempo ha subito profondi interventi di ristrutturazione, abbellimento e ampliamento. Quella che si presenta oggi agli occhi dei visitatori è frutto dei lavori avvenuti nel corso del XIII secolo da maestranze borgognoni che ne hanno disegnato l'aspetto gotico francese che la contraddistingue. L'edificio di culto si affaccia sull'omonima piazza, la sua facciata a capanna presenta un pregevole portale. Da ammirare anche il grande traforo del rosone. Sul margine destro della facciata, invece, si innalza il campanile anche questo costruito nel XIII secolo. L'interno della chiesa a tre navate e suddiviso da robusti pilastri, rappresenta una sintesi dell'originaria impronta romanica e delle successive aggiunte gotiche. La Chiesa di Santa Maria Maggiore custodisce pregevoli opere d'arte di epoca medioevale e rinascimentale, come il gruppo ligneo dedicato alla Madonna di Costantinopoli, custodito nella prima cappella della navata laterale destra, considerato uno dei maggiori esempi dell'arte romanica del XII secolo. Il gruppo comprende una statua della Madonna con Bambino e due pannelli lignei laterali rappresentanti dodici episodi della vita di Cristo e della Madonna. Da segnalare anche il trittico del Redentore, del XV secolo, unica opera autografata da Antonio da Alatri, il medievale fonte battesimale, il tabernacolo di epoca rinascimentale e il dipinto giottesco della Madonna della Libera, realizzato nel XIV secolo e che rappresenta l'immagine sacra più venerata in città e che viene celebrata l'8 settembre.
