Storia di Palmanova La fortezza di Palmanova è stata fondata nel 1593 dalla Repubblica di Venezia per contrastare le invasioni turche. Non dovette mai subire l'assedio dei Turchi, perchè questi dopo il 1499 non preserò più la via del Friuli. Rappresentò per secoli la più grande fortezza d'Europa ed ebbe una sostanziale funzione dissuasiva. Con la caduta di Venezia e l'arrivo dei Francesi Palmanova fu da questi occupata e riattata. Nei vari scontri tra Francesi e Austriaci si dimostrò un formidabile elemento difensivo che dovette cedere in fine solo per il quadro generale della guerra. Con il ritorno del Friuli all'Italia, la fortezza perse la sua qualifica di piazzaforte. Nella prima guerra mondiale funzionò da centro logistico. Nella seconda guerra mondiale rischiò di essere distrutta dai Tedeschi in fuga, che poi, convinti dall'arciprete, desistettero. Dal 21 luglio 1960 è monumento nazionale.
