Il Duomo di Bolzano rappresenta uno dei simboli più importanti della città, dedicato a Maria Assunta. Il suo edificio è stato realizzato nel 1300 in stile romanico e gotico. Esso rappresenta la perfetta fusione fra la cultura nordica e rinascimentale. I lavori di costruzione iniziarono sui resti di un tempio paleocristiano. Furono gli architetti Martin e Peter Schiche i principali fautori degli interventi architettonici. Questi realizzarono il rivestimento in marmo e la porticina del vino, tra le più belle dell'intero Tirolo. Il campanile, alto 65 metri, fu disegnato invece da Burkhard Engelberg di Augusta e fu completato nel 1517 da Hans Lutz von Schussenried. Dedicato a Maria Assunta, esteso su tre navate, è uno dei primi esempi architettonici di "chiesa a sala", che non prevede cioè la sopraelevazione della navata centrale. Anche l'interno, così come la struttura esterna, descrivono perfettamente il profondo contrasto fra lo stile gotico e rinascimentale. E' ricco di capolavori artistici capaci di sedurre anche il visitatore più esperto. Tra questi è certamente da annoverare il pulpito, realizzato in stile gotico dallo stesso Hans Lutz von Schussenried. I rilievi raffigurano i 4 padri della chiesa cristiana: S. Agostino, S. Gerolamo, S. Gregorio Magno e S. Ambrogio.
