Quel gigantesco leccio che da oltre 500 anni fa la guardia alla Villa di Belmonte Sul crinale della collina che divide Grassina da Antella si sviluppa il parco della villa di Belmonte. Nel belvedere che guarda Firenze un gigantesco leccio distende la sua splendida chioma di 23 metri, con altezza di 11 metri. La parte più caratteristica è senza dubbio il tronco che ha una circonferenza di 5,50 metri e ha subìto un'azione di torsione tale da far risultare l'estesa chioma sfasata di oltre 90 gradi rispetto alle radici. Non è da escludere l ipotesi che all' inizio non si trattasse di un'unica pianta ma di più lecci uniti, attorcigliati e avviluppati insieme nel corso dei secoli, «come se un gigante l' avesse afferrato dall' alto facendogli compiere un quarto di giro». Nella sua pancia c'è proprio il cuore della pianta dove si poteva stare comodamente seduti in dieci persone quando, fino a qualche anno fa, il luogo era la mèta preferita da tante famiglie per le scampagnate primaverili. Le dimensioni testimoniano gli oltre 500 anni d'età di questo patriarca vegetale che è ritenuto uno dei più belli della Toscana e che per anni è stato oggetto di studio di arboricoltori e botanici. Valido Capodarca ha scritto che «Il leccio è qualcosa di favoloso, un esemplare da antologia» e anche lo scrittore Maurizio Maggiani volle andare a trovarlo nel 1988 rimanendo affascinato e impressionato dalla sua «leggerezza impossibile, di una forza dolcissima, di un'immensità quieta, di una maternità infinita. Questo leccio è una madre, la madre di ogni altro leccio e, forse di tutti gli altri alberi». Nel parco della villa si trova anche un monumentale cipresso di 25 metri d altezza con una circonferenza di 5,20 metri per cui si può stimare un' età di circa 500 anni. Se potesse parlare avrebbe una bella storia da raccontare. In un manoscritto di Bindo Simone Peruzzi del 1741 si legge che «la villa fu della Famiglia de Barberini, e vi era un cipresso piantato di propria mano dal Pontefice Urbano VIII, come si sa per tradizione». In effetti, Maffeo Barberini ? che divenne papa nel 1623 ? frequentava spesso la villa della quale fu proprietario fino al 1590. Considerate le dimensioni e l'età dell antico cipresso, si potrebbe pensare che proprio questo sia stato piantato dalla mano di un futuro papa, per cui, essendo''in grazia di Dio'', sia sopravvissuto fino ad oggi.
