Costruito per sostituire il ponte metallico sospeso intitolato a Maria Teresa, il ponte Umberto I è una presenza monumentale che permette l'attraversamento del Po in corrispondenza di corso Vittorio e del borgo Crimea. A partire dal 1840 i torinesi poterono attraversare il Po in corrispondenza dell'attuale corso Vittorio Emanuele II grazie al ponte Maria Teresa, una struttura metallica a campata unica che assicurava il collegamento con la collina ed in particolare con il borgo Crimea. Lo sviluppo urbano rese velocemente superato il ponte, che dal 1879 venne riservato solamente al traffico pedonale. In quell'anno cominciò un lungo e appassionato dibattito, che animò il Consiglio Comunale e l'opinione pubblica cittadina fino ai primi anni del Novecento, circa il miglior progetto per un nuovo ponte. Negli anni, le varie commissioni municipali presero in considerazione più di cinquanta progetti di ponti metallici, in muratura oppure in cemento armato. Infine, risultò vincitore quello degli architetti fiorentini Vincenzo Micheli e Enrico Ristori, e venne così costruita una struttura in muratura lunga 124 metri, caratterizzata da tre arcate leggermente differenti (30-32-30 metri), la cui notevole larghezza era stata progettata per allinearsi a corso Vittorio e non per le contenute esigenze del traffico di allora. Nonostante l'originaria intenzione di mantenere il nome del vecchio ponte, dopo l'omicidio del re Umberto I nel 1900 venne decisa la nuova dedica. Venne inaugurato nel 1907 alla presenza di Vittorio Emanuele III di Savoia. Dopo aspre critiche per la troppa linearità del progetto nel 1911, ad ornamento del ponte, furono aggiunti quattro gruppi scultorei allegorici; Luigi Contratti (1868-1923) eseguì la Pietà e il Valore su corso Vittorio Emanuele II, Cesare Reduzzi (1857-1911) realizzò invece l'Arte e l'Industria, sul lato di corso Fiume. In seguito a questa modifica il ponte fu inaugurato una seconda volta durante l'esposizione Universale del 1911.
