E' una nave goletta usata normalmente per l'addestramento degli Allievi Nocchieri e Portuali. Fu varata nel 1934 a Nantes e svolse la sua attività con il nome di "Commandant Louis Richard". Date le sue ottime caratteristiche nautiche e tecniche, nel 1950 fu acquistata dalla Marina Militare Italiana e sottoposta ad una serie di grandi lavori che ne cambiarono totalmente la fisionomia e la trasformarono in nave scuola. Entrò in servizio il 16 luglio 1955. Ha una lunghezza di 68,9 m., un dislocamento di 1341 t. e con la sua superficie velica di 898 mq. raggiunge una velocità di 10 nodi. Dispone di motore ausiliario da 600 Hp a 1200 rpm. L'albero di trinchetto misura 35 m., quello di maestra 34,50 m. e quello di mezzana 30 m. Il suo motto è: "Faventibus ventis".
