Il Parnassius phoebus è un lepidottero che può essere considerato raro e molto localizzato, fatta eccezione per poche località di alta montagna in cui vi sono residue colonie piuttosto numerose (al massimo di due decine di individui). L'insetto è diffuso, in Europa, in alcune zone delle Alpi (escluse, tra l'altro, le Alpi carniche) da una quota di 1500 m. fino a 2500-3000 m. E' anche presente, con sottospecie differenti, sulle Montagne Rocciose degli Stati Uniti ed in Asia centro-orientale (tanto è vero che è stato descritto per la prima volta da Fabricius proprio in Siberia, nel 1793). E' più comune verso i 2000 metri. Le colonie sono poste vicino a torrenti sulle cui sponde vegeta Saxifraga aizoides, la pianta ospite delle larve, dai caratteristici fiori gialli. Il comportamento dell'adulto è simile a quello del P. apollo, fatta salva l'abitudine di passare la notte nel folto dell'erba, anzichè sulle sommità dei fiori (per nutrirsi l'adulto ama il nettare del genere Allium) (oss. pers.). Le larve, se le uova schiudono in estate, trascorrono ibernate la stagione invernale, risvegliandosi poi nelle giornate di tepore primaverile. Ruggero Verity, nella sua opera più conosciuta (Le farfalle diurne d'Italia) descrive il "risveglio" del bruco raccolto ghiacciato. Esso "sverna da piccolissimo, fra le radici impiastrate di melma della sua pianta alimentare; è stato raccolto gelato fino all'irrigidimento completo, ma, appena sciolto il ghiaccio in una stanza?" si è rivitalizzato.
