A few years ago, I would get paid a small amount to officially photograph this annual event. Now, there is no money for such and so now I don't! I do take some for myself though, without flash, from the side of the road, alongside everybody else. The lighting can be either very bright (the vastly overlit commercial floats on lorries) and almost completely in the dark. This shot, of local stilt walker Jonathan the Jester and one of his young pupils, having just cycled through his legs was in a medium amount of light. I used just one lens, my very old, heavy, manual focus Nikkor 135mm f2 Ai, on the also old full-frame D700, purely for its ability to get distance street shots in such low light conditions but the heavily geared manual focus meant many were out of focus (depth of field is wafer thin) and adapting to the light changes and exposure challenges with a camera that is falling to bits was difficult also. But, I did get more usable images with less noise than other years trying with the DX D7000 and say, the 70-200mm f2.8 Sigma. |

A great image that must have been very difficult to get under such lighting conditions and with lots of people around! The image is well balanced with the girl in the background, too - nice one, Tim! |

Thank you Ann - seems everybody else just shoots video, at most probably very dodgy quality as that makes it unnecessary to actually get a single shot sharp or even in focus as they're wide views of the whole scene. The start of this series of mine, here, features another at this event, a couple of years ago and taken with the same lens. |
