Al centro della cupola, sotto il mosso baldacchino trionfa la gloria radiosa di Maria fra la gioia degli angeli osannanti e musicanti, mentre dalla luce paradisiaca del cupolino si protende la Trinità ad accogliere l'anima e il corpo della Vergine. Un lembo di cielo e di paradiso, con stelle d'oro e nubi trasparenti, scende così nello spazio architettonico della cupola delimitato dai lacunari tracciati dal Bibiena. Nel vastissimo spazio concavo, figure ed episodi sono distribuiti con disinvolta regìa e con gradualità di toni e di luci, senza rigide incorniciature ma con pause sapienti e festosità di ghirlande fiorite. E' un esito mirabile, frutto della perfetta sintonia fra il pittore figurista e il decoratore quadraturista. Il Bortoloni vi lavorò dal 1746 al 1748; poi passò a Bergamo ed a Milano dove morì nel 1750, a undici giorni di distanza dalla morte di Francesco Gallo. Felicino Biella, il quadraturista, portò invece avanti fino al 1752 la fantasiosa decorazione "rococò" del presbiterio, degli ingressi laterali e dell'atrio, disseminando conchiglie arricciate, finte cupolette, finti raggi di sole, illusori scorci architettonici e paesistici. Anche due suoi figli lavorarono poi, con risvolti già neoclassici, alle volte delle cappelle di s. Francesco di Sales e di s. Giuseppe. Intanto il loro padre Felicino tornava al Santuario nel 1770 per completare la ricca decorazione del refettorio dei frati nel vicino monastero cistercense.
