La chiesa della Gran Madre di Dio è uno dei più importanti luoghi di culto cattolici di Torino. Sita nella piazza omonima, all'estremità orientale del Ponte Vittorio Emanuele I, prospiciente a piazza Vittorio Veneto è la chiesa principale di Borgo Po. Particolare importanza riveste per la città intera, sia per la sua storia, sia per la sua posizione, che ne fa uno degli scorci più suggestivi, vicino al fiume Po. L'architettura della chiesa riprende quella del Pantheon romano. Il tempio, di proprietà comunale, fu eretto per volontà dei Decurioni (Amministratori) della città, per festeggiare il ritorno del re Vittorio Emanuele I di Savoia il 20 maggio 1814 dopo la sconfitta di Napoleone. Non a caso, sul timpano della chiesa è presente l'epigrafe ORDO POPVLVSQVE TAVRINVS OB ADVENTVM REGIS («La nobiltà e il popolo di Torino per il ritorno del re»), scritta dal latinista Michele Provana del Sabbione.Molto importante è l'apparato plastico e scultoreo di esterno ed interno, al quale parteciparono gli scultori Angelo Bruneri (San Maurizio), Giuseppe Bogliani (San Carlo Borromeo e San Giovanni Battista), Carlo Caniggia (Amedeo IX di Savoia), Giuseppe Chialli (San Marco), Antonio Moccia (Margherita di Savoia), Andrea Galassi (statua della Gran Madre di Dio). Di particolare bellezza sono i quattro bassorilievi dell'interno, raffiguranti la Vita della Vergine (Natività, Presentazione al Tempio, Sposalizio, Incoronazione), realizzati su disegno e modello di Carlo Finelli dagli scultori milanesi Gaetano Motelli, Abbondio Sangiorgio, Francesco Somaini (a cui è attribuito anche l'altorilievo sul frontone esterno), e Francesco Stanga. Sono del Novecento il grande Crocifisso dello scultore Edoardo Rubino, ed un bassorilievo di Umberto Baglioni. Nei vani collocati all'interno del basamento della chiesa, in una cripta disegnata da Giovanni Ricci, si trova il sacrario dei Caduti della prima guerra mondiale, contenente le ossa di oltre 5.000 torinesi morti in battaglia. La chiesa della Gran Madre avrebbe, secondo gli esoterici della Torino magica, un significato particolare: tra le due statue che rappresentano la Fede e la Religione, sarebbe sepolto il Sacro Graal.
