La Chiesa dei Santi Martiri si trova lungo via Garibaldi, all'angolo con via Botero. È dedicata ai più antichi patroni di Torino: i martiri santi Avventore, Ottavio e Solutore e ne custodisce le loro reliquie fin dal 1584. La chiesa suggella l'alleanza del duca Emanuele Filiberto I di Savoia, presente alla posa della prima pietra nel 1577, e i Gesuiti, chiamati a Torino negli anni Sessanta del Cinquecento a dirigere un collegio nell'Isola di San Paolo, tra le antiche vie di Dora Grossa (oggi Garibaldi) e dei Guardinfanti (oggi Barbaroux). Edificata su progetto attribuito a Pellegrino Tibaldi (1527 ? 1596), la fine della costruzione è attestata (cupola esclusa) da un documento del 1612.L'interno è a navata unica, con quattro cappelle laterali, due per parte, poco profonde, ma riccamente dotate. Sono intitolate all'Immacolata, a san Paolo - la più antica, già terminata nel 1584 -, san Francesco Saverio e sant'Ignazio, ovvero i santi più importanti della Compagnia di Gesù. Verso il 1680 il padre gesuita Andrea Pozzo (1642 ? 1709), pittore ed architetto, ne affresca la volta ma della sua opera sono rimasti solo due particolari (superstiti gli angeli accanto all'organo) ed il resto è sostituito dall'opera di Luigi Vacca nel XIX secolo. Il coro è decorato verso il 1630 con gli affreschi di Isidoro Bianchi di Campione d'Italia. Dopo l'assedio del 1706, l'area del presbiterio è ristrutturata radicalmente su progetti di Carlo Giulio Quadro (coro, cupola e campanile). Filippo Juvarra progetta l'altare maggiore e, nella nuova sacrestia, l'altare di Sant'Ignazio ed il lavabo (1733 ? 1734). Bernardo Antonio Vittone cura la nuova pavimentazione marmorea del presbiterio ed il restauro della facciata (1768 ? 1770). Nella chiesa sono sepolti tre illustri personaggi della storia della città di Torino: il filosofo conservatore savoiardo Joseph de Maistre (1753-1821), Giovanni Francesco Bellezia, coraggioso sindaco della città all'epoca della tremenda peste del 1630, e Giovanni Botero, prete e autore del cinquecentesco trattato Della ragion di Stato. Un importante restauro si è concluso nel 2000. Consiglio di osservare lo scatto in HD.
