Il castello medievale è situato in una posizione strategica sopra Lana, lungo la strada che porta al Passo Palade. Castel Leone (ted. Leonburg) fu costruito, su una collina nei pressi di Lana attorno al 1200, da un antenato dei Conti Brandis. Nel 1275, Mainardo II di Tirolo-Gorizia assalì il castello. Ma, prima del secondo assalto, i proprietari, la famiglia Brandis, si dichiararono sconfitti, lasciando volontariamente il castello al nemico. Nel 1295 Castel Leone passò in possesso dei Conti di Tirolo-Gorizia. Come altri manieri, Castel Leone fu distrutto in gran parte da un incendio nel XIII secolo. Negli anni che seguirono, le parti danneggiate vennero ricostruite. In seguito, tra il 1461 e il 1463, i Conti Brandis ripresero la proprietà del castello e ne sono in possesso ancora oggi. Probabilmente, solo per questo motivo, il maniero oggi è ancora conservato nel suo stato originario. Castel Leone, un castello fortificato e per questo probabilmente chiamato “Leone”, è composto da due torri a tre piani e una zona adibita ad abitazione. Un'altra possibile spiegazione del nome del castello è che derivi dall'antico nome di Lana (Lenon - Lanaburg). L'edificio non è accessibile al pubblico. (didascalia rubata)
