LA CACCIA - Menzione d'onore al National Geographic USA 2012 Personalmente ritengo che, al di là della rappresentazione formale della realtà, mediata dagli strumenti tecnici necessari a fermare nel tempo un'immagine, la fotografia sia fatta di intuizioni. Lo scatto rimane l'ultimo atto del catturare l'immagine e per molti versi la parte più semplice dell'intero processo. Ero in safari all'interno del Masai Mara National Reserve, in Kenya, quando incontrai una famiglia di tre ghepardi che lentamente si muovevano da un territorio ad un altro. Decisi di seguirli consapevole che probabilmente non avrebbe portato a nulla, ma la luce era buona e questo era già un ottimo motivo per proseguire. Ad un certo punto, in lontananza, un maschio adulto di impala ruminava sotto il sole radente del pomeriggio. Intuii allora che sarebbe potuto accadere qualcosa, così in pochi attimi lasciai i ghepardi e mi avvicinai all'impala, per portarmi nella zona calda della scena con le condizioni di luce migliori e degli sfondi perfetti. L'obiettivo era concentrarmi sull'attimo decisivo della caccia. Avevo due possibilità: o immortalare la caccia con tempi di scatto molto brevi o decidere per un panning. La seconda scelta mi sembrava difficile, ma da prendere in considerazione, così chiusi tutto il diaframma, controllai l'esposizione e il tempo di 1/8 di sec. mi sembrò più che sufficiente per seguire la corsa del più veloce dei mammiferi. L'attesa, quello che per un fotografo naturalista è parte decisiva per un ottimo scatto, era iniziata. Ebbi giusto il tempo di pensare che un panning mi avrebbe permesso probabilmente di avere un'immagine evocativa ed una rigorosa struttura concettuale che in un attimo il ghepardo si lanciò nella caccia, alzai la camera e iniziai a scattare. Fu tutto rapidissimo, pochi secondi e l'impala soccombeva tra gli artigli del ghepardo. Era tutto finito, inutile continuare a scattare l'evidente finale. Nel dislpay della camera avevo lo scatto, ero eccitatissimo. Questo panning, pur nella sua imperfezione, con l'armonia cromatica dello sfondo, con tutte le informazioni superflue eliminate e con la fortuna di avere in simmetria la coda alzata del felino con le corna dell'impala, porta l'osservatore all'interno della caccia senza distrazioni.
