L'Eremo delle Carceri è un antico romitorio posto ad 800 metri di altezza, sulle pendici del monte Subasio. È immerso nel cuore di una verde boscaglia, a circa cinque chilometri da Assisi. In questo luogo Francesco si ritirava in contemplazione, per riservare a sé stesso alcuni periodi di più intensa preghiera insieme ai primi seguaci. Da qui frate Silvestro rispose a san Francesco che non doveva vivere per sé solamente ma darsi anche all'apostolato.
