I Boes e sos Merdules avanzano nella notte rischiarata dal fuoco acceso in onore di S. Antonio nella sera del 16 gennaio, è uno spettacolo ancestrale che emoziona sono maschere antiche che risalgono alla notte dei tempi. “Sono le maschere tradizionali di Ottana insieme a “sa Ilonzana maschera lugubre di cui vi parlerò un'altra volta” rappresentano il bue ed il suo padrone. Riassumono quello che era anticamente la vita nel piccolo centro, quando avere un giogo di buoi era quasi tutto, se non tutto quello che si possedeva e significava comunque essere benestanti. Per realizzare le maschere, viene usato prevalentemente il legno del pero selvatico per la sua leggerezza e la pressoché mancanza di venature e nodi. La stella che viene scolpita sulla fronte del "BOE" era di buon auspicio mentre per la figura del pastore "SU MERDULE" detto anche "SU GOBBEDDU" (il gobbo) si tendeva a farla il più possibile brutta e deforme in modo da far paura anche al diavolo e cosi allontanare le sfortune della vita. I Boes (i buoi) sono ricoperti con pelli di pecora e una cintola di cuoio alla quale sono attaccati dei campanacci. I Boes sono rincorsi e tenuti con corde e redini da sos Merdùles, gli uomini, i contadini che in tutti i modi cercano di sopraffare la forza dell'animale nel tentativo di sottometterlo.”
