Tim è uno degli ultimi grandi tusker rimasti in Kenya. È questo il termine usato per descrivere gli elefanti africani, solitamente maschi, con zanne tanto lunghe da raggiungere il suolo. Le magnifiche zanne sono una calamita per i bracconieri e questi grandi maschi sono costantemente a rischio. Tim è il più vecchio elefante di Amboseli. Ha 49 anni e le sue zanne pesano quasi 45 kg. La zanna sinistra è più piccola della destra perché è la dominante usata più spesso. Nel corso del mio ultimo viaggio ho avuto la fortuna di vedere questo gigante gentile molto da vicino e mi sono così interessato alla sua storia. Tim è stato seriamente ferito sulla groppa da una lancia nel 2014 e curato per l'infezione sopravvenuta da un gruppo di veterinari. Gli elefanti di Amboseli talvolta fanno irruzione nelle coltivazioni al di fuori del parco, distruggendo i raccolti. Per un raid di elefanti gli agricoltori possono perdere tutto il loro sostentamento in una sola notte. Così per rappresaglia gli elefanti vengono spesso feriti ed uccisi. Nel 2016 Tim è stato nuovamente trafitto da una lancia e colpito con una grande pietra sulla fronte, riportando una ferita molto grave. Tim è allora entrato nel parco andando direttamente al campo dei conservazionisti dove sapeva di poter trovare aiuto! Oggi sta bene. Il Kenya Wildlife Service gli ha messo un radio collare e la sua posizione è seguita costantemente da una squadra di ranger che può intervenire per allontanare l'elefante se si avvicina alle aree agricole.
