Il nome Agapanthus deriva dal greco agàpe, che significa amore, e ànthos, cioè fiore. Banalmente quindi si chiama ed è a pieno titolo un fiore dell'amore. Non è però il suo solo significato, infatti soprattutto nel suo paese d'origine il Sud Africa, è inteso come simbolo di eleganza e di classe. Ben accolto in giardino come in casa, è consigliato come regalo romantico se la persona che lo riceve ci tiene molto all'etichetta, all'eleganza e all'originalità
