Nel contesto degli imponenti lavori di ristrutturazione di via Roma e degli isolati circostanti avvenuti tra il 1931 e il 1937, il podestà Paolo Thaon di Revel avanzò l'ipotesi della ristrutturazione della Galleria Geisser (già Natta), edificata nel 1856 su disegno di Barnaba Panizza. La nuova struttura, realizzata nel 1933 dall'architetto Federico Canova e dall'ingegner Vittorio Bonadè Bottino, viene da questo momento denominata San Federico, dalla storica intitolazione dell'isolato. La galleria si contraddistinse all'epoca per i caratteri di modernità delle forme e dei decori. La planimetria a T presenta una razionale suddivisione degli spazi destinati ai negozi, ai magazzini, agli uffici, alle rimesse sotterranee e al cinematografo. All'incrocio dei bracci si trovava a fine Ottocento il famoso Caffè della Meridiana, ritrovo di letterati e di bohémiens, tra i primi locali di Torino aperti fino a tarda sera. Qui il quotidiano "La Stampa" inaugurò nel 1934 la propria sede, poi trasferita in via Marenco nel 1968. I restauri, intrapresi nel Duemila hanno riportato questo storico spazio urbano del centro di Torino al suo antico splendore.
