The sensor of every
digital camera has a determined (fixed) sensitivity,
that is called "base sensitivity". (for
example, the base sensitivity of the Canon 20D is ISO
100; the base sens. of the Nikon D70s is ISO 200, etc.
). To obtain the equivalent of higher sensitivities,
the camera amplifies the signal registered by the
sensor; the unavoidable small errors and imprecision
that occurs during the amplification create a
grain-like disturbance called noise...
