My Friends :-)

Daniela Pipitone is a young and very talented photographer. She is able to capture even the delicate beauty of the smallest things - her macro photos are a joy for the eyes. Daniela is also my best friend :-) I have done two trips with her and we have spent countless morning photographing in the Italian countryside, and I am always amazed by her eye for compositions and colors.

I've met Fenice (Giulia De Sena) in late December 2006 and in few months, she has become one of my best friends! Her enthusiasm for nature appears clearly into each of her images: in these years, she has kept improving both her photography techniques and her knowledge of nature, in particular birds.

GSM Arena is my favorite mobile phone website. Always updated with the latests news from the mobile world and with in-depth reviews.

PC Magazine is a very good online magazine about technology and software. Latest news, reviews, articles and much more.

Dark Roasted Blend is a fantastic website about "weird and wonderful things"...bizarre animals, remote places, unusual technologies...it is really worth the visit!   The Big Picture is a series of photos published several times per month by The Boston Globe. Amazing series of photos about various subjects (often related to recent news).

Tonmo, The Octopus News Magazine Online is a good resource for those who are fascinated by the underwater world, in particular for squid and octopus fans.

Interesting Websites - Software I use

Microsoft doesn't need many presentations ;-) I am a Windows user (currently I have Windows XP Pro) and I use Microsoft Expression Web 2 to create JuzaPhoto pages.

Adobe is one of the software giants. I use several programs from adobe: Photoshop CS4, Acrobat Reader, Premiere Elements.

Firefox is a great browser. Until some years ago I had Internet Explorer, but now I am very happy with FF! I use it with some add on (English Dictionary, FireShot, FireFTP).   Avira is my favorite anti-virus solution. It is simple and it does not slow down your system as Norton and other programs do. It is even available in a limited features free version!

Skype is a good messaging/chatting/calling program; it is easy to use and it has a nice interface. You can even make free voice calls to other Skype users.    VLC is a cross-platform video player. It has a simple and clean interface (customizable with many skins) and it is free!

phpBB is the php Bulletin Board development website. If you are thinking of creating a forum, phpBB is the best "software" (even though it is far from perfect) - and it is free.

Interesting Websites - Things I use or I like

TomTom makes good car navigators and an excellent software for mobile phones with GPS (included the iPhone). I have a TomTom 720 from two years and I love it!

Garmin is another big GPS manufacturer. I have three navigators, and two of these are Garmins. Other than car navigators, Garmin make excellent outdoor units.

BMW is my favorite car manufacturer (even though currently I own an Honda Civic :-)). If I had a lot of money I'd buy the gorgeous BMW X6.   Tesla Motors is the manufacturer of Tesla Roadster and Tesla Model S, high performance 100% electric cars. I don't own a Tesla but I think it is a very cool technology!

Interesting Websites - Information, News, Useful services

Google News: Sci/Tech lists the latest news about the Science and Technology. The news are taken for thousands of sources.

Wikipedia is an amazing online encyclopedia that anyone can edit. It is a great resource and a great way to learn about...everything.

Google News can be considered a kind of "online newspaper", with thousands of sources and links: much more complete and impartial than any TV news.   ViaMichelin has updated maps of Europe, and it is a great help to evaluate routes and to find driving directions. Other than that, it helps to find hotels, attractions and more.

Sunrise and Sunset lists the hour of sunrise and sunset in many countries; it is updated daily. An useful resource to plan photographic trips!    YouTube is the well know "video publishing" website. You can use it both to publish and host your videos and to watch videos about a bit of everything.

Where and how to buy

B&H Photo Video (www.bhphotovideo.com) is one of the largest stores of new and used photo and video equipment: if you are searching something, it is likely that you will find it there.

Adorama (www.adorama.com) is another large photography dealer. The prices usually are the same of B&H, but it is always worth checking. Other than selling new equipment, Adorama offers the possibility of buying and selling used equipment, and it has even a rental service.

NewEgg (www.newegg.com) sells both photo equipment and a lot more: computer hardware, software, mobile phones and more.

Amazon (www.amazon.com) is well known and serious, but it is not one of my favorite dealers. The problem of Amazon is that sometimes they don't sell directly, they publicize other (dubious) dealers. You can find good prices on Amazon, but I recommend to buy there only when it is clearly specified "Ships from and sold by Amazon.com".

Rebates, offers and warranty

Sometimes, the dealers have special offers on some specific items - always check the price on all the dealers listed in this page, so you can be sure to find the best offer. Other than that, sometimes the manufacturers offers "rebates" or "cashback".

To get the rebate, you have to send a coupon (included with the item you bought) to the store/manufacturer, and they with send you the amount of money specified by the promotion. Wouldn't it be simpler to lower the price? Yes, of course, but many manufacturers prefer to use rebates because they want to promote a product only in a particular area; for example, the rebate may be available only for U.S. residents. SanDisk and Canon are two good examples of manufacturers that often offer rebates on their products.

There are two main types of warranty; the "manufacturer" warranty (e.g. Canon USA Warranty, Nikon USA Warranty) or the "Store" warranty (e.g. B&H warranty). What are the differences? The items with manufacturer warranty are imported in the U.S. by the official manufacturer; if you have a problem you have to send the product to the manufacturer. The items with store warranty (also known as "grey market" or "direct import" items) are imported in the US by the store itself; if you have a problem you have to send the product to the store. The prices usually are lower than the prices of products with manufacturer warranty. Which one to choose? You have to consider the difference of price (pay attention to possible rebates); if there is a substantial difference, I'd suggest to buy the imported (cheaper) item.

Pay attention to scams!

If you buy from one of the websites that I have listed in the first paragraph, as I recommend, you will never take the risk of being scammed. If you try other stores, instead, you have to pay attention. There is plenty of fraudulent websites that advertise every kind of stuff (camera, lenses, etc.) at fantastic prices. If you order something from them, in the best case you'll lose the money that your paid; in the worst you will lose a lot more money and you will have a lot of troubles. I don't want to scare anyone from buying online, but please pay attention to the place where you buy from, otherwise you will be ripped off by these felons.

Remember that is a price looks too good, it is a scam. An example: nowadays, the Nikon D300 costs $ 1600 at B&H. If you find it at $ 1500 on another site, it may be legit. If you find it at $ 800, it is a scam for sure! There is no way that a honest dealer sells something at half the regular price!

If you don't know a dealer, check it on ResellerRatings (www.resellerratings.com). RR has a database of thousand of stores with the opinions of those who bought from there; if a store is a scammer, you will see a lot of negative feedback. Of course, there is the possibility that a reseller hadn't been rated yet, and some comments might be misleading, but overall ResellerRatings is an excellent resource to discover if a store is honest or not. Don't forget to add your buying experience, positive of negative, to ResellerRatings!
