Cerro Torre, night view with stars - March 12, 2010
The Canon 300mm f/2.8 is not the classic landscape lens. That said, sometimes the telephotos are the key for unique landscapes: if you are not satisfied by the result you get with wide-angles, try a longer focal to focus the attention on a detail of the landscape! This photo is taken from the first viewpoint on the Cerro Torre, about 1 hour from El Chalten (1.30h if you have a ton of photographic equipment). I visited the viewpoint for the first time at sunset...

Travel notes from the world: Argentina - March 10, 2010
Argentina is an huge country and it has a great variety of landscapes and wildlife. I have visited Patagonia - the southern half of Argentina - with my friend Emanuele Castronovo; we planned the trip by ourselves and we had chosen February because it is a summer month in Patagonia (in the southern hemisphere the seasons are to opposite in comparison with Europe...

Tamron SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD - March 09, 2010
Tamron has announced the SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD! The interesting thing about this lens is that is uses an ultrasonic AF motor...it is the first Tamron lens to use this technology :) By the way, it is "true" ultrasonic motor, with full time manual focus, it is not "micro usm" as the Canon 70-300 IS USM.

Details and discussion: Tamron announces his first ultrasonic AF lens!

Canon 7D in the field: Patagonia - March 05, 2010
In my latest trip to Patagonia I have had the opportunity to use extensively the 7D in the field, for wildlife photography. I bought the 7D in late November and I immediately liked it...now I like it even more! This photo has been taken in Tierra Del Fuego, near Ushuaia. Like all wildlife photos of this trip, it is taken handheld: using a stabilized lens, plus relatively high ISO, it is possible to get tack sharp photos! The image quality of the 7D is...

Interesting stuff - March 04, 2010
I don't put often websites in the home page news, but these two are interesting! Photovisi (www.photovisi.com) is a free online service that lets you create collages from your photos easily. If you are looking for a well done web photo gallery software, instead, I recommend to give a look to Piwigo (piwigo.org)!

Canon has finally announced the new firmware for Canon 5D2, that improves the video capabilities of this camera to match the 7D. Last, one cool link you must not miss: Would YOU go this far for your perfect picture?

Holy cow! :-) - February 23, 2010
While I was photographing glaciers and mountains in Patagonia, there have been a ton of interesting announcements! SanDisk has joined the club of the 64 GB SDXC cards; Sony has announced the development of a mirrorless Alpha camera; Sigma has announced a ton of lenses, including my APS-C dream...a 8-16mm f/4.5-5.6 HSM zoom! Nikon has announced the 24mm f/1.4 - a killer night photos lenses, in particular if you combine it with the king of high ISO, her majesty the Nikon D3s; Canon has announced the 550D, a good upgrade from the 500D - if offers 18mp and HD video with full manual control. I'm going to review a lot of this stuff as soon as possible! ...and that lovely 8-16mm may end up in my bag, can't wait to try it! :-)

My test of the Canon 1D Mark IV is online! Thanks to my friend Sandro who loaned me the 1D4, and Serpy who loaned the D3s, I have compared the two flagship! Other than that, I have added to the comparison my own cameras, the Canon 1DsIII and the 7D. The review includes a lot of 100% crops and even some full size images for download!
