Canon 18-200 vs Sigma 18-250 vs Tamron 18-250 and 18-270 - July 01, 2009
Superzoom are popular lenses between amateur photographers: they are extremely versatile, and they allow to take almost every kind of photo with a single lens. They are relatively small and light, and not too expensive. But are they good? Or the compromised made to create a 11-15x zoom at a low price gives unacceptable image quality? I have tested the latest superzooms from Canon, Sigma and Tamron to aswer to this question...

Kingston 128 GB pen drive (and other storage solutions) - June 20, 2009
Few days ago Kingston has announced a 128 GB pen drive: it does not require energy, it is very drop-resistant and very small and light! You can read more and discuss this interesting technology here: Kingston 128 GB pen drive.

I think that in future pen drives will replace external HDD, but for now the price/GB ratio is still in favor of the HDD: I have just bought three Transcend 500 GB portable (2.5") drives, to replace my old 3.5" drives...and I love them! Details and discussion: Transcend 500 GB 2.5" external HDD...very good!

Travel Notes: Ireland - June 17, 2009
Ireland has been a pleasant surprise. I have travelled all around the country with Agata, for a trip focussed on landscapes - we visited mainly the coastline...some places are truly impressive! The most beautiful places I have seen are the "Giant's Causeway", thousand of basaltic columns with geometric shapes, created by a volcanic eruption millions of years ago...

I have added a section about Ireland to the Travel Notes from the World article!

Travel Notes: Finland - June 12, 2009
In May 2009, I have spent eight days in Finland for wildlife photography. The trip has been organized by Memy - a nature photographer and member of the Italian JuzaForum - and there were 16 persons! Usually I prefer trips with much smaller groups, but thanks to Memy's effort, the trip has been a success! We reached Helsinki by plane, then we rented four cars and we traveled towards north. Traveling in Finland is...

Landscapes of Ireland! - June 11, 2009
The gallery of landscapes taken in Ireland is online! All the photos had been taken with 1DsIII, 500D and wide angles, in particular with my Sigma 12-24...that has died in this trip :-/ I was shooting on the Cliffs of Moher when the tripod with 1DsIII and 12-24 fell due to strong wind...the camera has survived with just few scratches, while the lens was destroyed. I have already ordered a new copy - I love this lens :-)

Canon 500D: White Balance matters! - May 29, 2009
When I take still photos, I don't care about white balance: I always keep the WB on Auto and I select the correct white balance during RAW converstion. With video, it is not possible: even though you can correct the color balance during post processing, the result is not as good as using the right white balance. In natural light Auto WB works well, but with artificial light, it is easy to get a result like that..

update: May 29, 2009: White Balance matters!

Sigma 100-300 f/4 vs Canon 300 f/4 IS and Canon 100-400 - May 26, 2009
The Sigma 100-300 f/4 is an unusual tele zoom: unlike the majority of other tele-zooms in its price range, it has a constant maximum aperture of f/4. It is cheaper than Canon 100-400 and 300 f/4, and it is not much bigger, in spite of the aperture and internal zoom. I had heard very positive opinions about its image quality, so I have decided to compare it against the Canon 100-400 and the Canon 300 f/4 IS. How does these lenses compare, with and without teleconverters?

Canon 500D vs 350D - May 08, 2009
After so many tests about video, today I have decided to try the still capabilities of the 500D, comparing it with the old 350D...

Canon 500D: Picture Styles and "video RAW" - May 06, 2009
While for photos you can use RAW so you don't have to worry about the setting of sharpness, contrast, etc, during video these settings become very important. If your setting give oversharpened video, for example, you can't remove the excessive sharpening during post processing, so it is important to set the picture styles on the right settings: the video quality can be quite good...

Canon 24-105 vs Sigma 24-70 2.8 HSM vs Tamron 28-75 2.8 - May 05, 2009
The standard zooms are the most popular lenses for every manufacturers; there are dozens of standard zoom, and nearly every photographer owns one of these lenses. In this test, I have compared the best standard zooms of every manufactuter (in Canon EF mount...in future I'm going to test also Sony and Nikon). I own the super versatile Canon 24-105 IS, and I have compared it with the new Sigma 24-70 2.8 HSM and with the Tamron 28-75 f/2.8, one of...

Canon 500D: Low light and bright lenses - May 02, 2009

As shown in yesterday's test, the 500D is not a great performer in low light. How can you improve the results? There is only one way: bright lenses. Since the video is taken at 30 frames per second, the shutter speed can not be longer than 1/30; the only way to have more light is to use a brigh aperture. Until now, I have liked a lot my Sigma 20 f/1.8, but with the 500D I have changed my mind: for video this lens is an awesome choice...

update: May 02, 2009: Low light and bright lenses

First tests with Canon 500D! - May 01, 2009

In late april 2009, I have bought the small Canon 500D. The main reasons for this choice is to have a reflex camera with video (I want to take videos with the Canon EF lenses!) and the 15 megapixel APS-C sensor, that allows to make very precise lens tests and to take photos of distant subjects (birds, wildlife) with good quality. I'm not going to publish a traditional review of the 500D. Instead, I'll publish here a "500D blog": what I learn every day from tests and experiences in the field with the 500D! The first test is online: May 01, 2009: Video Quality...big sensor advantage?

My Canon 500D has arrived! - May 01, 2009
