Subjects : Full mountain, breathtaking landscapes to reach with walks of all distances and difficulties. Possible visit from the old abandoned forts scattered throughout the area. All elements placed in dominant areas and from which you can enjoy a certain view! There is an old military road on which you can see passing cyclists, off-road vehicles and cross bikes that you photograph at the right bend can be truly amazing. At night there are no lights that soil the horizon, apart from the very dim ones of the shelter, so great place for photos at night and shooting to the stars! Spotted a couple of wolves, obviously marmots, ibex and chamois. Among the suggested trips there is Rocca la Meja, accessible in the day but which requires a certain capacity in the final stretch, you have to slip into an open channel practically vertically; there are steps carved into the rock but they are still challenging. Once you reach the top, however, you can enjoy all the view of the surrounding alpine arch (including the Monviso)! Also on one of the walls of the Rock has been opened a climbing route, so if you are lucky you can come across the athletes struggling with the ascent in a truly spectacular environment!

Recommended equipment : In the period when I was in that area we happened to be reached by some clouds and some times a few showers, nothing exaggerated but better to have something that resists a minimum of water (my Canon 60D did it great) or be ready with u n bag/gadget to cover the equipment. Watch the wind on the passes, pull a lot and raise not a little dust! As optics obviously a good wide angle, possibly with good opening , so you can exploit it even at night. Paired with a good trion of course! If you are interested in some sports shots a canvas in the backpack is ultra recommended of course, for the fauna instead there is nothing so special but it is not difficult to come across some suede. The wolves I was talking about are rare, we were told at the shelter that they were probably just transiting to another area... Checking the weather a drone can really make a difference, obvious knowing that a drop of wind can come, but I talked to a pilot who was doing filming and he told me that his Phantom 4 had no problems even if there was a bit of breeze!

Best months : In summer of course you can enjoy all the beauty of the area and reach the most difficult areas (including Rocca la Meja), better the period of the beginning of June and late August/start in September so as not to find too much "traffic". In winter the shelter can be reached without too much difficulty (of course you have to equip yourself) but I was able to learn from the manager that with the snow the whole area turns and if you have the desire to stop at night you can admire spectacular light games between the snow, the stone peaks and the clear sky.

How to get there : You can't get to the shelter by car, indeed it is advisable to leave it at the beginning of the valley. Of course there are more walkable trails, the one used by us passes through the lower part of Val Maira and then turns in the valley of Marmora. From here you can still get in the car up to flat Preit. Climbing up I noticed that some cars reached up to the shelter below, the Farmhouse La Meja, but I do not recommend, the road is part of the former military and the bottom is very bumpy.

Visits : Free vale, the refuge offers the typical prices of such "isolated" places. You can also book for groups of 15 people!

Notes : During my stay in the area we did various excursions throughout the valley and on the surrounding peaks. Obviously the shelter itself is already in a great place but turn allow you to find even more beautiful views! If you decide to spend only one day, realize that the approach by car takes some time (from Turin at least 2 and a half good hours)! Good Light!
