Subjects :The Baltoro is one of the largest glaciers in the world, about 60 km long lies at the foot of some of the highest mountains in the world: the Masherbrum, the Gasherbrum group, the Broad Peak, the Trango towers and of course the K2. It lends itself particularly well to landscape photography, but there are also opportunities to photograph other interesting subjects. During the mountaineering season numerous expeditions go back and forth between Askole (the last town before the glacier) and the base camps of the various mountains. There are therefore numerous porters, caravans of mules and guides who accompany the mountaineers to the heart of the Karakorum, offering various photographic ideas. Being so far from civilization then at night you can also take beautiful photos of the stars
Recommended equipment :The trek to reach the base camp of K2 (the furthest point from Askole and destination of many organized trekking) lasts 8/10 days, so consider that all the equipment you will have to carry it on your shoulder for the duration of the trek. Definitely useful a wide-angle lens and a canvas for landscapes (as mentioned the main subjects are the mountains)
Best months :Summer, from June to September many agencies organize trekking to the base camp of K2, some instead of redoing the same road even on the way back propose to pass by Gondogoro La pass. It is certainly a more challenging alternative (5600 meters) but certainly worthwhile. Since the area is part of a natural park, you have to rely on a local guide, it is not possible to visit the area completely independently, you also need a permit. The altitude varies from 3000 to 5000 meters, even in August temperatures drop significantly especially at night, not to exclude the possibility of snowing.
How to get there :From Islamabad you take the plane to Skardu (if time permits, otherwise you have to do 12 hours by car). Most treks start from here, usually you take a jeep to Askole and from here you start walking towards Concordia (the point where the Baltoro glacier starts thanks to the confluence of 3 smaller glaciers). The trek lasts an average of 15 days round trip. As already mentioned, you have to organize yourself by relying on a local guide (easier if you contact a local agency directly). There is the possibility to organize both private trips and join an already formed group
Visits :Permission required to enter Central Karakorum National Park
